Imagine losing all your photos on your last day of your backpacking trip. You can take simple precautions to avoid this. Make regular backups of your photos in case something happens to your camera or if the memory card gets full. You can burn CDs or DVDs in Internet cafés (make sure you have a good sturdy jewel case which protects the media) or you can store your pictures on your MP3/media player or an external memory stick. If you are on a really fast (and I mean reaaaaaaaaally fast) connection you can even upload the photos somewhere on the Internet such as Flickr or Picasa.

Indeed the above is quite possible.  The camera makers have done what is likely best, however, integrated cameras that function very well for the price.  But that was not clear in the early days of DSLR's. it was fairly clear. Not to everyone discussing it.  There was also the notion of maintaining film capability, although that desire has completely waned in the great majority of shooters.

segment of professional photography with 4/3.  Few professional photographers are going to stand for less than 36x24 which affords a lower pixel density at over 2x the number of pixels. Example: Oly E-420:    101 lp/mm 10.0 Mpix         Canon 5DII:     78 lp/mm 21.0 Mpix          Sony a900:     84 lp/mm 24.6 Mpix Not to mention the pixel growth noise constraints.

Nikon is struggling to keep up with Canon, and the D700X is part of that   strategy. struggling?  nikon sold more cameras than canon did last year.  a bigger issue is the economy. Agreed on the economy. Where are sales figures available for Canon and Nikon? I would have thought only estimates were published by third parties. And please don't mention Google! here's another report
